At Danish Distillers, generations of distilling experience have proven that grain is the ideal foundation for creating a smooth and well-balanced spirit. Thus the first step is to carefully select whole grain wheat to begin producing Fris Vodka.
Once the ingredient has been inspected, it's crushed and heated in water to break down the starch. This three-day fermentation process transforms the starch into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
The the crude alcohol produced during the fermentation then goes through a six-column continuous distillation. Through these six columns, the strength of the alcohol is increased while the unwanted impurities called fused oils are removed by applying ultra low temperatures to the spirit mixture.
During this critical state, Fris Vodka's patented Freeze Distillation process is applied in the second column, named the lutter column. Freeze Distillation removes additional impurities such as fusel oils while retaining the aromas and flavors. The fusel oil impurities freeze into a solid mass while the alcohol remains as a liquid spirit. The solid fusel oil masses are then separated from the liquid spirit in order to produce a vodka of ultimate smoothness and quality.
After the six-column distillation process, the freeze-distilled spirit is blended with softened water taken from deep artesian wells in Northern Jutland. This water is naturally filtered and infused with minerals. A final filtration process takes place immediately prior to bottling in a polishing filter. As a final step, bottles are rinsed with vodka and then filled to be shipped out.
Danish Distillers arranges guided tours of the factory by appointment. Tour lasts two hours with a presentation of the company, a tour of the production facility, a visit to the aquavit museum and the opportunity to sample products and make purchases in the shop.
