The Macallan distillery is one of the prime destinations for visitors located on the famous Speyside whisky trail, where more than half of the whisky distilleries are located in Scotland.
Speyside Whisky Trail
The spiritual home of the Macallan Single Malt whisky is Easter Elchies House, situated on the banks of the Spey for more than 300 years as a symbol of Scottish fortitude as seen on the label of the Macallan. "Alchies" is one of the few place names of Basque origin left in Scotland, translated as "el," a town or residence, and "che," a hill.
There was a farm and a mill on the Easter Elchies Estate, where whisky making begun as far back as the late 1700s. The first recorded licensed distillation of the Macallan was in 1824.
Farming still continues on the estate; in late summer, the fields around Easter Elchies billow with "Golden Promise" barley that is the signature grain of the Macallan. The lanscape gains grandeur from being set amid the Grampian moutain range, among the highest in Britain.
Salmon is plentiful at the River Spey, Scotland's second longest river flowing between Loch Spey in the central Highlands and the Moray Firth in the far North East.
Macallan's whisky is matured at the Macallan distillery located by Easter Elchies House. The Macallan Sherry Oak range is exclusively matured in used Sherry oak barrels that are crafted in Jerez, Spain.
Sherry Oak range includes 10, 12, 18, 25, 30 year old and Elegancia. The Macallan Fine Oak whiskies are matured from 8 to 30 years in European and American oak barrels that are previously used for aging sherry or American bourbon whiskies. Result of this unique cask combination is a smooth, delicate and light single malt. The color of the whisky is all natural, deriving solely from the maturation process.
