History of Vodka

We believe that vodka was first created a rye-based spirits in the 12th century in Russia and was used for medicinal purposes. It was not until the 14th century that vodka began production in both Russia and Poland. In Russia, vodka was used as a ritual spirit and served at religious events. In the 17th century, it became customary for vodka to be served at Russian imperial banquets. All formal meals began with vodka and bread.

In the days of the Czar, Russian vodka was produced from potatoes, whereas, it is distilled from rye, corn or wheat today. Vodka is distilled at a very high alcohol content and them filtered through vegetable charcoal. The higher the proof, the less the flavour.

Vodka did not become popular in the United States until the 1930ês when the Smirnoff family arrived with their special recipe. Under this family it was voted that gold vodka is best aged at ten years in wine casks. Peter the Great is considered the father of Pepper Vodka simply because he was the first to add pepper to his vodka. Flavored vodkas are produced with lime, lemon, and pineapple. Vodka the unique spirit that is recognized for its lack of color, taste and aroma is the base for cocktails such as the Screwdriver, the Bloody Mary, and the Kamikaze.
