Scotch Whisky Facts:
  • Scotch whisky is made from three ingredients: malted barley, water and yeast.

  • The distinctive smoky taste comes from the peat fire over which the green malt is dried prior to grinding, mashing and distilling.

  • There are more than 2,500 brands of Scotch whiskies sold in more than 200 countries worldwide according to the Scotch Whisky Association. Today exports represent around 90% of the total sales of Scotch whisky.

  • When tasting Scotch whisky, experts recommend using a snifter or a balloon shaped glass where the neck is narrower than the base, allowing the drinker to nose and enjoy the bouquet and character before sipping. More about tasting

  • Blended Scotch Whisky (such as Johnnie Walker, Dewar's, Chivas Regal) - Master Blender's aim is to produce a consistent blend that is different from others, subtle and complex with up to 50 single malt whiskies of various ages.

  • By the 1820s, more than 14,000 illicit distillers were making whisky in Scotland, more than half the whisky consumed in Scotland without contributing a penny in duty.
